This light meets the standards used in studies of light exposure to treat SAD. I did a lot of research before purchasing and found this light as one of the few out there that has 10,000 lux at 12 in. and is less expensive than some of the others I found.
Most lights advertising to treat seasonal depression don't even tell how close you have to be to get the 10,000 lux used in studies and actually require you to be so close (6-8 inches) that it is not likely to be used properly. This light is designed to be a reasonable distance and is big enough to fill my visual space with it's very bright light.
The base allows it to sit above you, and shine down (like the sun would do). With this light sitting on a table right in front of me it is about 12 in away. It has adjustable hight and angle which is helpful in getting it to work with your setup.
It is not small by any means, but that is a good thing! If it were small it wouldn't cover my view when sitting near it and, I imagine, would be less effective. Although it is large, it is stable and not too heavy to move if you want to get it out of the way.
It came with the base and light apart, but only took a couple minutes to put together and had clear instructions.
I've been using it for a week now, and so far so good. I do feel like it makes me feel more awake first thing in the morning, and I have had more energy and motivation than I typically do. As for depression, I can't say yet, as I haven't had enough time with it. I purchased in hopes to avoid the winter blues I usually get, so we'll see if it makes a difference by the end of winter.
Overall, if you are looking for a true "treatment light" I definitely recommend it.

Still a good product
I bought this to replace an older Carex Daylight lamp (green one in photo) that I could not find replacement bulbs for. This new one is not as well made, though the luminosity is fine. I don't know how long it will last, but so far I am ok with it. I just wish I could have replaced the bulbs in my older unit (model DL2000) as it is much more substantially built. Carex does not sell the replacements. I still would recommend this new one though, as it is probably the best daylight lamp available.

Easy to set up, simple to use, and DOES NOT REQUIRE REPLACEMENT BULBS. I made the mistake of buying a replacement bulb because Amazon recommended it but that was unnecessary. The lamp is lit by a series of LEDs behind the screen. Also, since it uses LEDs, the lamp doesn't get hot. It doesn't even get warm. Very safe to use.
I highly recommend.
