Meditation Chair FAQ

After reading through our reviews of the best meditation chairs on the market, you might still have some questions.

Let’s check out some common questions about meditation chairs so you can find out which design would be the best for your needs, such as if you prefer to meditate while rocking in a chair or sitting upright.

Can I meditate in a rocking chair?

meditaition in rocking chair

Whether or not you want to use a rocking chair when you meditate is up to your personal preferences. But, you might find that using a regular rocking chair is disruptive to your meditation, especially if you battle to maintain the same rhythm.

That’s why choosing a rocking chair that’s built specifically for activities such as meditating is worth it. In our reviews, we featured the ergonomic kneeling chair that encourages better posture, and it’s worth investing in if you want to start meditating.

For some people, rocking during meditation can be beneficial. There are also good rocking chair meditations that you can try. In fact, even just visualizing the rocking motion is said to help you ease into the calming feeling and breath sensations of meditation.

Rocking during meditation is beneficial in that it can be relaxing and soothing. It might also help you reach a deeper state of meditation.

Rocking is not to be confused with swaying, however. Some people who meditate experience what’s known as swaying, which is when their bodies sway during meditation. It’s been said that swaying has the spiritual meaning of being a kundalini awakening.

When you activate your kundalini energy, you get into the position of being able to make a spiritual connection. While this energy is said to be dormant in many people, it can be awakened through swaying.

How do you sit in meditation?

While you might think you can sit in any way you please during meditation, there are actually some important ways to sit for the best experience. Ideally, you should sit in a chair that has a straight back and keep your feet flat on the floor in front of you.

It’s good for your legs to create a 90-degree angle with your knees. Your head and neck should be in line with your spine, so focus on having good posture. That said, you are certainly not limited to this seated position, as you can meditate standing up or lying down.

There are two important things to bear in mind, however, when choosing the best way to meditate. To ensure comfort when you meditate, you need to focus on having good posture. You also need to remain alert. This is why you might battle to meditate while lying down.

Some meditation experts say that you should remain seated during meditation because you’ll be relaxed as well as focused, but not too relaxed that you can fall asleep. This is because you’re sitting upright.

While there are many ways in which to sit for meditation, it’s recommended that you sit upright when you begin. This is because it will help you to focus. You can then find a more comfortable position or method at a later stage once you get into the habit of meditating.

Can you meditate in bed?

meditation in bed

If you feel you can meditate best while lying down on bed, you can certainly go ahead. Here are some tips to make it effective.

  • Choose a broad surface, such as a bed that’s a bit longer and wider than your body, so that you will feel that you can extend your legs and arms without being distracted by your leg flopping over the edge of the bed or knocking into a lamp on the nightstand.
  • Try to keep your back straight when you lie down, with your legs hip-distance apart, and your hands spread out with your palms facing the ceiling. This position is important because it balances both sides of your body.

This is known as the Savasana Posture, which is a yoga pose sometimes called the “corpse pose.” It might take a bit of practice because of how it’s very relaxing that you might battle to stay awake, especially if you’re meditating before bed.

There are many benefits linked to meditating while lying down. These include the following:

  • It can help you to relax. If you’ve been sitting at a desk chair or working on your feet all day, being able to lie down when meditating can help you to relax your muscles and mind.
  • It relieves discomfort. If you’ve been meditating sitting down a lot, you’ll know that it can put pressure on your body, leading to pain in the hips, back, legs, and knees. By lying down, you eliminate this pain. Of course, if you love meditating while sitting down you can eliminate body pain by investing in an ergonomic chair, such as the ergonomic kneeling chair that has a rocking motion which we featured in our reviews.
  • It helps you to focus. You might find it easier to focus on meditation and clear your mind of other thoughts when you lie down. This is as a result of how you won’t be aware of any discomfort in your body, which allows you to clear your mind of intrusive thoughts.

Why do you cross your legs when meditating?

crossed legs meditation

You’ve probably seen that some people like to sit cross-legged on the floor when they meditate. This has become quite a common way of sitting for meditation, but why?

The main reason is because of how the position facilitates the movement of energy through the body. You feel grounded when sitting in this position. The lotus position, which we look at later on in this section, has been said to enable the body to remain still in the same position for a long period of time.

In addition, it puts pressure on the lower spine, so blood is directed from the legs to the abdominals in order to assist with digestion. There are many different ways in which you can make use of the cross-legged position while meditating. Let’s look at the most common poses.

  • Easy pose. This pose is when you sit cross-legged but you keep your knees wide, you cross your shins, and you place your foot below the knee of the opposite leg. This is a comfortable pose and it makes it easy for you to round your spine during meditation. However, you might find that your feet fall asleep during this pose, which could be distracting during meditation.
  • Burmese pose. This is when you sit on the front half of your meditation cushion and bend your knees, then turn your knees out to either side so that you’re cross-legged. Your left heel should be inside your right thigh and your right heel should lightly touch the top of your left foot or ankle – it needs to be a bit in front of you. You can add some pillows underneath your knees if you feel you require the additional support for this pose.
  • Quarter-Lotus pose. This pose requires you to get into the same position as the Burmese position, then sit on the edge of your pillow or cushion. Let your hips open and cross your legs in front of your body. Your left foot should stay on the floor along the inside of your right thigh, and your right foot should be placed on the calf of your left leg.
  • Half-Lotus pose. This requires you to get into the same pose as the Quarter Lotus we outlined, but the difference is that you should put your right foot on the top of your left thigh instead of your calf.
  • Full-Lotus pose. The full lotus is something you should only try once you’re comfortable with other cross-legged meditation positions as it does require you to be quite flexible. To get into this pose, you should use the same position as what you did for the Half Lotus, but place your left foot on your right thigh and ensure your right foot is on your left thigh.

Conclusion

If you love meditating, having the right chair can help you tremendously.

Not only does it help you to zone into the meditation, but it can also support your back and legs so that you can enjoy longer sessions without feeling any aches or pains.
